5-Aminosalicylic acid is used to relieve symptoms and to prevent their
recurrence in inflammatory bowel disease.
This medication must be taken regularly to be fully effective. It should be
taken precisely as prescribed by your physician.
Continue taking the medication until instructed by your physician to stop.
Contact your physician or pharmacist regarding refills. Abrupt
discontinuation is not recommended.
Rectal use: To get the best results from rectal suppositories, attempt to
empty the bowel immediately before rectal administration, and retain the
suppository for at least 3 hours if possible.
Suppository: Remove the foil wrapper and lightly moisten the suppository
with water. Lie down on your side and push the suppository well up into the
rectum with your finger (rubber gloves may be worn). If the suppository has
softened because of storage at too warm a temperature, refrigerate for 20
to 30 minutes until it has hardened sufficiently for easy insertion. Remain
in the lying position if necessary in order to help retain the suppository.
Side effects are very uncommon. If side effects occur contact your physician or pharmacist.
If you forget to take a dose, take it as soon as you remember. Take the remaining doses for that day at the regularly scheduled times.
Store rectal suppositories at room temperature (less than 25 degrees C) and
away from direct light.
Keep the medication in the container it came in and keep it out of the reach of children. Do not allow anyone else to take the medication.
