5-Aminosalicylic acid is used to relieve symptoms and to prevent their
recurrence in inflammatory bowel disease.
This medication must be taken regularly to be fully effective. It should be
taken precisely as prescribed by your physician.
Continue taking the medication until instructed by your physician to stop.
Contact your physician or pharmacist regarding refills. Abrupt
discontinuation is not recommended.
Rectal use: To get the best results from rectal enemas, attempt to empty
the bowel immediately before rectal administration, and retain the enema
for at least 8 hours if possible.
Rectal suspension: Self-administer at bedtime. Shake the bottle well.
Remove the protective sheath from the applicator and lubricate the
applicator tip (for easier insertion). Lie on your left side with the lower
leg extended and the upper right leg flexed forward for balance. Insert the
applicator tip in the rectum, pointing the tip toward the umbilicus.
Slightly tilt the bottle, aiming the nozzle towards your back. Steadily
squeeze the bottle until all of the suspension is discharged. Withdraw the
bottle from the rectum and discard.
Side effects are very uncommon. If side effects occur contact your
physician or pharmacist.
If you forget to take a dose, take it as soon as you remember. Take the
remaining doses for that day at the regularly scheduled times.
Store the rectal suspension at room temperature (less than 25 degrees C)
and away from direct light. Keep the rectal suspension from freezing.
Keep the medication in the container it came in and keep it out of the
reach of children. Do not allow anyone else to take the medication.
