Acyclovir is used to hasten healing and prevent recurrence of virus infections caused by herpes simplex.
Use the ointment or cream exactly as prescribed by your physician. Therapy
should be initiated as early as possible following onset of signs and symptoms.
Apply a sufficient quantity of ointment or cream to adequately cover all lesions. The dose size per application will vary depending on the total lesion area but should approximate a one-half inch (1 cm) ribbon of ointment per 4 square inches (25 square centimetres) of surface area.
Use a fingercot or rubber glove when applying ointment or cream to prevent
hand/finger contact of virus and possible self-inoculation (spread) to other body sites or transmission of infection to other persons.
Application should generally continue for 10 days. Relief of symptoms and healing are not immediate.
Burning or stinging upon application sometimes occurs. These effects are
usually minor and do not cause concern. Discomfort will diminish with continued use.
Long-term use will not prevent recurrence or decrease infectivity. Should
lesions recur, consult your physician.
