Acyclovir is used to hasten healing and prevent recurrence of virus
infections caused by herpes simplex. It is also used to lessen severity of
chickenpox.
Use the medication exactly as prescribed by your physician. Therapy should
be initiated as early as possible following onset of signs and symptoms.
Oral acyclovir may be taken with food or on an empty stomach.
If you are taking acyclovir orally to prevent recurrence of infection,
follow your physician's instructions carefully for the best results.
Side effects with oral acyclovir are not common but may be seen with high
doses or prolonged use. Contact your physician if persistent or bothersome
effects such as diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, lightheadedness or headaches
occur.
Keep this medication in a labelled container, out of the reach of children.
Do not allow anyone else to use this medication.
