This medication contains two ingredients: betamethasone and calcipotriol.
Betamethasone is related to cortisone and has anti-inflammatory effects.
Calcipotriol is a vitamin D derivative that helps control the increased
production of skin cells that occurs in psoriasis.
Apply the ointment once daily to psoriatic areas and rub it in gently. This
medication is for external use only. Avoid contact with the face and eyes;
if you get some in your eyes, flush with water. Wash your hands after
applying this medication.
Use this medication exactly as prescribed by your physician. Do not use it
more often or for a longer period of time than advised as this may cause an
increased risk of side effects. Using too much on thin-skinned areas such
as the face, groin or armpits can produce thinning of the skin and stretch
marks. This is especially important if it is prescribed for an adolescent.
Do not use in children.
An improvement in your condition may be seen after a week of once daily
applications. After using the ointment for four weeks, good improvement
occurs in most patients but may take longer in others. The ointment is
usually stopped after there is adequate improvement. Carefully follow your
physician's instructions.
This ointment may cause mild itching. Using too much ointment can increase
the levels of calcium in the body and this can cause side effects. Do not
apply to large areas of damaged skin, in skin folds, or under occlusive
dressings. These can cause increased absorption of the medication.
Do not use this product if you have a skin infection of any kind including
viral (cold sores) or fungal infections. This medication can hide the
symptoms of infection and can also allow infection to worsen. Tell your
physician if you have a skin condition that causes easy bruising or
thinning of the skin.
Do not use more than the recommended maximum of 100 grams of ointment per
week. If you are also using the scalp lotion containing calcipotriol
(Dovonex), do not use more than 30 mL of the scalp lotion per week and not
more than 60 grams of this ointment (Dovobet) per week.
Tell your physician if you plan to become pregnant or if you wish to
breast-feed your baby.
Store this medication in its original labelled container out of the reach
of children and pets. Store between 5-25 degrees Celsius. Do not
refrigerate as the ointment becomes too thick to spread easily. Use within
6 months of opening the tube. Do not use after the expiration date.
