Betamethasone is similar to cortisone, a natural body hormone. It relieves
swelling, inflammation, itching, and allergic reactions. The rectal enema
is used as a retention enema to treat ulcerative colitis.
Use this medication only as directed by your physician. It should be used
regularly to be fully effective. Always keep an adequate supply on hand.
Do not stop taking this drug abruptly. If you wish to stop taking it,
contact your physician.
Tell every physician or dentist who treats you that you are taking
betamethasone, even up to a year after you stop taking it.
Remain in close contact with your physician as he/she may wish to perform
periodic tests to monitor how well the drug is working.
Contact your physician if you develop acne or other skin problems, new bone
or joint pain, bloody or black, tarry stools, filling or rounding of the
face, menstrual problems, mental depression, muscle cramps or pains, muscle
weakness, nausea or vomiting, visual disturbances such as halos around
lights, continuing stomach pain or burning, swelling of feet or lower legs,
unusual tiredness or weakness, or wounds that don't heal.
Notify your physician if you are planning to or become pregnant, or if you
wish to breast-feed.
Try to clear the bowels before administering the enema.
Use of the enema:
(a) Obtain an instruction sheet from your pharmacist.
(b) Administer the enema in the evening just before going to bed to
allow the longest contact time in your bowel.
(c) Lie on your left side. Remove the protective cap.
(d) Gently insert one-half of the lubricated nozzle into your rectum.
(e) Gradually roll up the plastic bag onto itself to push the solution
into the rectum over about 1-2 minutes.
(f) Roll over onto your stomach and stay in this position for
3-5 minutes.
(g) Sleep in a suitable position for retaining the enema. Try to
retain the enema for the whole night or at least as long as
possible.
Store this medication in its original labelled container out of the reach
of children and pets.
