Betamethasone is similar to cortisone, a natural body hormone. It relieves
swelling, inflammation, itching, and allergic reactions. It is used to
treat a number of different conditions including severe allergies, skin
problems, bursitis, tendinitis, and arthritis.
This is an injection and will usually be administered by your physician or
other health professional.
If this medication has been injected into one of your joints you must
carefully follow your physician's advice and not overuse the joint too
soon. If symptoms worsen or if swelling and redness develop, contact your
physician.
You should not receive any vaccinations for infectious diseases while on
this medication.
Tell your physician whether you are also taking other cortisone-like drugs
such as prednisone.
Medical conditions: Tell your physician if you have tuberculosis or any
other infection or if you have diabetes, bone disease, high blood pressure,
heart disease, stomach ulcers, glaucoma or cataracts. These may be worsened
by this medication.
Tell every physician or dentist who treats you that you are taking
steroids, even up to a year after you stop taking them. If you have
received this medication for very long, its use should not be stopped
abruptly.
Remain in close contact with your physician as he/she may wish to perform
periodic tests to monitor how well the drug is working.
Contact your physician if you develop acne or other skin problems, new bone
or joint pain, bloody or black, tarry stools, filling or rounding out of
the face, menstrual problems, mental depression, muscle cramps or pains,
muscle weakness, nausea or vomiting, visual disturbances such as halos
around lights, continuing stomach pain or burning, swelling of the feet or
lower legs, unusual tiredness or weakness or wounds that don't heal.
Notify your physician if you are planning to become pregnant, or if you
wish to breast-feed.
