This medication contains two ingredients: betamethasone and salicylic acid. Betamethasone is related to cortisone and has anti-inflammatory effects; together with salicylic acid it helps to provide relief from inflammation and itching and improves skin conditions such as chronic eczema, psoriasis, neurodermatitis and scaly dermatoses.

Application of lotion: Apply a thin film to cover the affected areas of the scalp. It is usually applied twice daily.

Application of ointment: Apply a thin film to cover the affected area. Massage the ointment gently and thoroughly into the skin. It is usually applied twice daily, in the morning and evening.

Use this medication exactly as prescribed by your physician. Do not use it more often or for a longer period of time than advised as this may cause an increased risk of side effects. Using too much on thin-skinned areas such as the face, groin or armpits can produce thinning of the skin and stretch marks. This is especially important if it is prescribed for a child or an adolescent.

This product should not be used if you are allergic to salicylates such as ASA or Aspirin (acetylsalicylic acid). If you develop increased redness, itching, blistering or swelling in the treated area, notify your physician. You may have developed an allergy to this product.

Do not use this product if you have a skin infection of any kind including viral (cold sores) or fungal infections. This medication can hide the symptoms of infection and can also allow infection to worsen. Tell your physician if you have a skin condition that causes easy bruising or thinning of the skin.

If your condition seems to be getting worse or if there is no improvement after a week of treatment, discuss this with your physician.

Side effects: There may be a slight temporary stinging when applying the preparation. Dryness, burning or irritation may develop. After prolonged use, thinning of the skin and stretch marks may occur. Prolonged frequent use on large areas especially under dressings can lead to hormonal side effects due to absorption of the medication. In children, growth may be affected. Rare side effects include: formation of blood blisters, easy bruising, acne, lightening of skin colour, skin pain, and numbness in fingers. Consult with your physician if you develop these or any other problems while using this medication.

Use in pregnancy: When used properly these medications have not been shown to cause problems in humans.

Use in breast-feeding: This medication should not be applied to the breasts just before breast-feeding as some of it may enter the milk. Otherwise no problems are expected.

This medication is for external use only. Avoid contact with the eyes; if you get some in your eyes, flush with water. Wash your hands after applying this medication.

Dressings: Your physician may recommend covering the medicated area with an airtight dressing using food wrap or a bandage. Follow the instructions carefully. Do not cover this medication with a dressing, bandage or other covering unless advised to do so by your physician.

Store this medication in its original labelled container out of the reach of children and pets.
