Dasatinib (da-SA-ti-nib) is used for the treatment of certain types of
leukemia.
Before taking this medication, be sure that your prescribing physician is
aware if you have any of the following conditions: history of previous
problems with this medication; liver disease; heart disease, long QT
syndrome; low potassium levels; low magnesium levels; a history of
anthracycline drug therapy.
This product contains lactose. Do not take it if you have a medical
condition that makes you sensitive to lactose.
Take this medication as prescribed by your physician. The tablets should be
swallowed whole, not crushed or chewed. It may be taken with food. Take it
at approximately the same time each day.
If you miss a dose, skip the missed dose and resume your usual schedule. Do
not take a double dose to make up for a missed dose.
If you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant, or if you are
breast-feeding, discuss the use of this medication with your physician.
Both women and men who are sexually active should use birth control while
taking this medication.
Adverse interactions with other medications are possible while taking this
drug. Ensure that your physician and pharmacist are aware of all of the
medications that you are taking, including natural health and herbal
products.
Avoid drinking grapefruit juice while taking this medication, since this
could increase toxic effects.
If you are taking an antacid, take the antacid 2 hours before or 2 hours
after taking this medication in order for this medication to be effective.
Common adverse effects include diarrhea, headache, fever, muscle pain,
fatigue, rash, bleeding, and fluid retention.
If unusual bleeding or bruising, swelling, weight gain, difficulty
breathing, fever or infection, or any other unexpected or serious reactions
occur, notify your physician.
If you have experienced any unexpected or serious reactions to this drug,
this can be reported to Health Canada's monitoring program (tollfree
telephone 1-866-234-2345, tollfree fax 1-866-678-6789). Note that this is
not an emergency number. Also ensure that your physicians are informed of
any adverse effects and record this for the future.
Store this medication in a labelled container, in a dry, cool place, out of
the reach of children.
