Duloxetine (doo-LOX-e-teen) is used to treat depression. It is also used
for other conditions including certain types of nerve pain, anxiety and
urinary incontinence.
Before starting this medication, be sure that your physician is aware if
you have any of the following conditions: allergy to this drug; history of
past problems with this drug; liver disease; kidney disease; high blood
pressure; glaucoma; bleeding disorder; seizure disorder; personal or family
history of suicide or bipolar disorder; slow gastric emptying; pregnancy or
possible pregnancy; breast-feeding.
This product contains sucrose; patients with fructose intolerance,
glucose-galactose malabsorption or sucrose-isomaltase insufficiency should
not take this medication.
Take this medication exactly as prescribed. It is usually taken once daily.
Taking it at the same time each day will help you to remember. Do not crush
or chew the capsule. It may be taken with or without food.
If you notice agitation, or worsening of your condition or emotional
problems, contact your physician.
Check with your physician or pharmacist before taking any other
prescription or nonprescription drugs or herbal products to make sure they
do not interact with duloxetine. Avoid alcoholic beverages while taking
this medication; certain side effects of the drug (e.g. sleepiness) may be
increased.
Contact your physician before discontinuing this medication. Do not
abruptly stop taking this medication on your own as this has sometimes led
to side effects.
Contact your physician if you develop any unexpected or unusual effects
while taking this medication, including yellow skin, abdominal pain, or
nausea.
This medication may increase blood sugar in patients who are diabetic.
Do not drive or operate hazardous machinery until you are certain that the
drug does not impair your ability to perform these tasks safely.
If you have experienced an unexpected or serious reaction to this drug,
this can be reported to Health Canada's monitoring program (tollfree
telephone 1-866-234-2345, tollfree fax 1-866-678-6789). Note that this is
not an emergency number. Also ensure that your physicians are informed of
any adverse effects and record this for the future.
Store this drug in its original container, away from heat, light and
moisture, and out of the reach of children.
