Enfuvirtide (en-FYOO-vir-tide) is an antiviral drug used to treat patients infected with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV).

Take this medication exactly as prescribed by your physician, in the amount prescribed. Taking more could increase the occurrence of adverse effects. It is important to take it regularly. Do not stop taking it without the approval of your physician. This drug commonly causes discomfort at the site of injection. Be sure to rotate injection sites and use proper injection technique as you have been taught.

Inform your physician if you notice any unusual or troublesome effects, especially cough, chest tightness, fever, chills, shortness of breath, signs of infection at the injection site, dizziness, weakness or tingling in the arms or legs. If dizziness occurs, avoid driving vehicles or operating dangerous machinery.

Discuss with your physician if you are considering pregnancy or breast feeding.

Note that this medication does not prevent the transmission of the infection to other people, therefore care should be taken to avoid exposing others.

GUIDELINES FOR SAFE DISPOSAL OF NEEDLES AND SYRINGES Safe disposal of needles will eliminate the risk of accidents and transmission of blood borne diseases to workers who handle the garbage. When you have given yourself the injection, place the needle and syringe into a strong plastic container or tin. It is not necessary to recap the needle or to separate the syringe and the needle. This decreases the risk of inadvertently pricking yourself with the needle. Cap the container and store in a safe place out of the reach of children. When the container is full, or when it is ready for disposal, pour half a cup of bleach into it. Cap the container tightly, seal with masking tape and shake it gently to distribute the bleach all over the contents. You can now dispose of this container with the regular garbage. Examples of containers that may be used: Strong plastic containers: bleach bottles, orange juice jugs, milk jugs. Tins: coffee tins, nut tins, candy tins. Glass jars should not be used since they may break easily.

Store this medication in its original container at room temperature, away from heat, moisture and light, and out of the reach of children. Once reconstituted, the solution may be stored in the refrigerator for a maximum of 24 hours. Discard any unused solution.
