Ezetimibe (e-ZET-e-mibe) is a drug used to lower cholesterol in the blood.
It works by reducing the amount of cholesterol that is absorbed from the
intestines. Most often it will be used in combination with other
cholesterol lowering drugs but it may be used by itself.
Take this medication exactly as prescribed by your physician. To be
effective it is necessary to follow the diet or exercise regimens
recommended by your physician.
Ezetimibe is usually taken once a day. It can be taken at any time of the
day, either on an empty stomach or with food.
Serious side effects are rare. If persistent or bothersome side effects
develop, especially if you notice a rash or facial swelling, stop taking
this drug and notify your physician.
If you plan to become pregnant or wish to breastfeed while taking this
medication, talk to your physician first.
Make sure your physician knows about all other medications you are taking
and any medical conditions you may have.
If you are taking this drug with cholestyramine, take ezetimibe 2 hours
before or 4 hours after the cholestyramine.
Store this medication in its original container, away from heat, light, and
moisture, and safely out of the reach of children and pets.
