Fluticasone is a steroid that is inhaled to help control asthma.
Take this medication exactly as directed by your physician. Do not use more
often than prescribed. To do so increases the chance of developing side
effects.
If you miss a dose, take the missed dose as soon as possible and then take
the next dose when it is due.
Before you have any kind of surgery (including dental surgery) or emergency
treatment, tell the physician or dentist that you are on this medication. A
medication alert card or bracelet/necklace should be carried or worn,
stating that you are on this medication.
Contact your physician if:
(a) You are injured, or are going through a period of stress.
(b) You have attacks that cannot be controlled by bronchodilator
medications, or your asthma seems worse.
(c) Breathing difficulty occurs.
(d) Signs of infection (e.g. chest pain, chills, fever, cough; nasal,
sinus, or chest congestion; sneezing, sore throat, etc.) occur.
(e) You develop creamy, white patches inside your mouth or nose.
(f) You notice unusual symptoms such as fast or irregular heart beat,
change in weight or appetite, increased thirst, lethargy, weakness,
dizziness or lightheadedness, skin rash, acne, muscle or joint pain,
nausea or vomiting, fullness of the face, back pain, menstrual changes,
frequent urination, unexplained nosebleeds, change in mood.
In order to be effective, bronchially inhaled fluticasone must be taken
every day at regular intervals. It does not provide immediate effects and
may take up a to week before improvement is seen.
Do not use bronchially inhaled fluticasone to treat an acute asthma attack
as it will not be effective. It is not a bronchodilator.
Ask your pharmacist for written, illustrated instructions on how to use
your inhalation device properly.
To use the metered dose inhaler:
Be especially careful to breathe in as you spray, to breathe in
slowly, and to hold the breath afterwards. If you see "mist" coming
from the top of your inhaler or the sides of your mouth, you should
start again.
(a) Remove the cap. Shake the inhaler.
(b) Hold the inhaler upright between fingers and thumb with your thumb
on the base, below the mouthpiece. If using the inhaler for the
first time, or if your inhaler has not been used for a week or
more, release four puffs into the air to ensure that it works
properly.
(c) Breathe out as far as is comfortable.
(d) Depending on your physician's preference, position the mouthpiece
either (i) with the mouthpiece about two finger widths outside the
wide open mouth, or (ii) with the mouthpiece well into the mouth
and close your lips firmly around it.
(e) Breathe in slowly and at the same time press down once on the
inhaler to release the medication. Continue to breathe in
steadily and deeply.
(f) While holding your breath, take the inhaler from your mouth.
Continue holding your breath for as long as is comfortable.
(g) If more than one inhalation is to be taken at each use, keep the
container upright and wait about half a minute before repeating
steps (a) through (f).
(h) After the prescribed number of inhalations, rinse mouth and gargle
with water. Spit out the rinse water, do not swallow it.
(i) Clean the inhaler every few days. Remove metal canister and
rinse mouthpiece and casing in warm water with mild detergent.
Rinse well and let dry in a warm place. Place canister back in
inhaler, and put cap back on. Release one puff into the air to
make sure that the inhaler works. Do not put the metal canister
into water.
(j) Keep inhaler away from flame or excess heat.
To use a metered dose inhaler with a spacer:
Be careful to spray first, then breathe in.
(a) Remove the cap from the mouthpiece and attach the spacer.
(b) Shake the inhaler.
(c) Tilt your head back a bit and breathe out.
(d) Place your lips around the mouthpiece of the spacer and form a
good seal.
(e) Spray the medicine once, then take a slow deep breath over about
3 seconds to inhale the medicine. Keep your lips sealed around
the mouthpiece.
(f) Hold your breath as you count to ten.
(g) Remove the mouthpiece and breathe out gently.
(h) Allow about one minute before taking another puff.
Keep the medication in the original labelled container and keep it out of
the reach of children. Do not allow anyone else to use this medication.
