Human Papillomavirus Vaccine (Gardasil) is used to prevent diseases caused
by Human Papillomavirus infection, including cervical cancer and genital
warts. It is administered by injection to women age 9 to 26.
If you have any of the following conditions, be sure that your prescribing
physician is aware of that before you start taking this medication: adverse
reaction to a previous dose of the vaccine; weak immune system; bleeding
disorder; or fever.
In order to be effective, 3 injections are given over a period of 6 months.
Visit your physician for the injections at the specified times.
Side effects are very infrequent and usually limited to minor irritation at
the injection site. However, if any unusual or particularly annoying
effects occur, including joint pain, contact your physician.
Inform your physician if you are pregnant, if you might become pregnant
while taking this drug, and if you are taking any other medication.
This vaccine does not prevent against other sexually transmitted diseases
or against all types of Human Papillomavirus infection.
It is important to continue to get regular screening for cervical cancer.
