This medication contains two active ingredients: hydrochlorothiazide and
triamterene. The triamterene is included because it decreases excess
potassium loss sometimes caused by hydrochlorothiazide.
This medication is used to treat high blood pressure, and fluid retention
caused by a number of conditions. It increases the efficiency of the
kidneys in eliminating unneeded water and salt from the body. An increase
in the volume of urine produced and frequency of urination will occur
initially; these effects will lessen after a short period of time.
Take the medication exactly as prescribed by your physician; it must be
taken regularly to be fully effective, even if you feel perfectly well.
Always keep an adequate supply on hand.
This medication should usually be taken after meals or with milk to prevent
stomach upset. The triamterene may cause your urine to become blue.
Once-daily dosages should usually be taken in the morning. If you are to
take two doses per day, it is best to take one in the morning and, at least
initially, the second early in the afternoon to avoid having to get up
during the night to urinate.
If you forget to take a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it is
almost time for the next dose, take only the regular dose at the next
scheduled time. Do not double doses.
Arise slowly from a lying position and sit upright for a few minutes before
standing, to avoid lightheadedness that may occur by a sudden change in
body position.
As this medication may cause an increase in potassium in the body, your
physician may wish you to avoid a potassium-rich diet, such as excessive
amounts of citrus or tomato juice, bananas and dried fruits. You may wish
to discuss potassium content of foods with your nurse, physician,
pharmacist or dietician. Do not change your diet without first consulting
your physician. Do not take potassium supplements or salt substitutes
containing potassium, unless advised to do so by your physician.
Contact your physician immediately if you experience symptoms of a high
potassium level in the body. These include fatigue, muscle weakness,
impaired movement, irregular heartbeat, and unusual feelings of the skin
such as tingling or burning.
A few people have found that their skin is more sensitive to sunlight while
taking this medication. Avoid exposure to direct sunlight and use a
sunscreen with a SPF of 15 or more. Avoid using artificial tanning devices
such as sunlamps or tanning booths.
Check with your physician if you notice any unusual symptoms or discomfort
while taking this medication.
It is important that you keep in touch with your physician while taking
this medication so that he/she may carefully follow how well it is working
and how your body responds to it.
Store this medication in the original labelled container at room
temperature, out of the reach of children.
