Hydrochlorothiazide is used to treat high blood pressure and fluid
retention caused by a number of conditions. It increases the efficiency of
the kidneys in eliminating unneeded water and salt from the body. An
increase in the volume of urine produced and frequency of urination will
occur initially; these effects will lessen after a short period of time.
Take this medication exactly as prescribed by your physician; it must be
taken regularly to be fully effective, even if you feel perfectly well.
Always keep an adequate supply on hand.
If you experience an upset stomach after taking this medication, you may
take it with food to decrease stomach upset.
Once-daily dosages should usually be taken in the morning. If you are to
take two doses per day, it is best to take one in the morning and, at least
initially, the second early in the afternoon, to avoid having to get up
during the night to urinate.
If you forget to take a dose, take it as soon as you remember it. If it is
almost time for the next dose, take only the regular dose at the next
scheduled time. Do not double doses.
Arise slowly from a lying position and sit upright for a few minutes before
standing, to avoid lightheadedness that may occur by a sudden change in
body position.
As this medication may cause an excess loss of potassium from the body,
your physician may wish you to eat foods high in potassium content, or may
prescribe potassium supplements or an additional medication that decreases
potassium loss. Do not change your diet without first consulting your
physician.

Check with your physician if you notice any unusual symptoms or discomfort
while taking this medication. Symptoms of nausea, dry mouth, thirst,
