Ferrous sulfate and other iron salts such as ferrous gluconate and ferrous
fumarate are used to treat iron deficiency anemia. Do not self medicate
with iron medication without consulting your physician.
This medication is usually taken on an empty stomach with a full glass of
water or juice. If stomach upset occurs, it may be taken with your meals.
Do not take with milk or milk products.

Occasionally, constipation or stomach upset may be caused by iron. If this
becomes severe, contact your physician.
Do not take within one hour of taking an antacid because antacids interfere
with the absorption of iron.
Liquid preparations should be diluted with water or juice and sipped
through a straw, followed by drinking a further glass of water or juice.
This will help prevent staining of teeth.
Iron commonly changes the stool colour to black.
It may take several months for the full benefit of iron to be seen. Check
with your physician to ensure that your course of therapy is complete
before stopping the drug.
Store this medication in its original labelled container at room
temperature, out of the reach of children. Overdosage may be fatal.
