Ketoconazole is used to treat infections caused by yeasts and similar
fungi.
Take this medication exactly as prescribed. It must be taken regularly to
be fully effective.
Continue taking the medication until instructed by your physician to stop.
Some infections, particularly those of the hands, feet, nails, or other
tissues, may require treatment for several months to effect a complete
cure.
While taking ketoconazole, do not take the antihistamines astemizole
(Hismanal) or terfenadine (Seldane). Adverse reactions have occurred when
these drugs were taken at the same time as ketoconazole.
Avoid using antacids while taking this medication. If antacids are
necessary, try to space the dose at least 2 hours after taking
ketoconazole. Avoid alcohol, and consult your pharmacist or physician
before taking any other medications.
Side effects are very uncommon and usually mild. Any initial stomach upset
usually subsides quickly with continued use; taking it with food may help.
This drug has occasionally caused liver damage. Notify your physician as
soon as possible if you notice any of the following: unusual fatigue,
loss of appetite, a yellow colour of skin or eyes, dark urine, or pale
stools.
Store this medication in its original labelled container at room
temperature, out of the reach of children.
