Ketotifen is an antihistamine and may be used to reduce the frequency of
asthma symptoms. It may also be used to prevent or reduce allergic
symptoms.
Doses are usually taken twice a day. Taking a dose with the morning and
evening meals will help you to remember.
Ketotifen will not relieve symptoms when an acute asthma attack occurs.
Your inhaled bronchodilator medication will be needed for quick relief of
symptoms.
This medication acts gradually and must be taken regularly to be effective.
A reduction in asthmatic symptoms may not be noticeable until after 10
weeks or more of continuous use. Do not stop taking this medication or any
of your other asthma medications without consulting your physician.
The most common side effect is drowsiness, especially when ketotifen is
started. However, with continued use, drowsiness generally lessens and
often disappears. Other side effects include weight gain, rash, dry mouth,
dizziness, nausea, and headache. Although most side effects are usually not
serious, if any are bothersome or interfere with day to day functioning,
contact your physician.
Because drowsiness may occur, avoid driving or operating hazardous
machinery until you know how this medication affects you.
Tell your physician if you are pregnant, or plan to become pregnant, or if
you wish to breast-feed your baby.
Store this medication in its original labelled container at room
temperature, out of the reach of children.
