Mexiletine is used to maintain a regular and efficient heart rhythm.
This medication must be taken regularly and exactly as prescribed to be
fully effective. Sudden discontinuation could lead to dangerous
palpitations or other irregular heart rhythms. Do not stop taking this
medication without your physician's advice. Always keep an adequate supply
on hand.
Take each dose while in an upright position with a full glass of water or
milk. Do not take any doses while lying down to avoid the medicine becoming
stuck in the throat where it might cause serious irritation.
This medication may be taken with food or milk or antacids to help prevent
possible stomach upset.
Side effects usually are mild and often disappear with time. Contact your
physician if you have persistent nausea or lightheadedness or if any other
especially unpleasant or annoying effects occur.
Because this medication initially may cause drowsiness, avoid driving or
operating hazardous machinery until the effects of this medication are
known.
This medication may interact with some other drugs, including caffeine.
Tell your physician and pharmacist about other medications that you use
regularly.
Store this medication in its original labelled container at room
temperature, out of the reach of children.
