Mupirocin is a topical antibiotic used to treat certain bacterial skin
infections.
This medication is for external use only. Do not get it in the eyes because
it is irritating. If you do get some in the eyes, flush the eyes with
water.
Apply this medication exactly as directed by your physician. Complete the
full duration of therapy even if your infection seems to have cleared. If
the infection has not improved in 3 to 5 days, or if it is getting worse,
contact your physician. Do not use this medication for more than 10 days.
Wash the affected area with soap and water, dry it thoroughly, then gently
rub in a small amount of cream or ointment. The area can then be covered
with a sterile gauze dressing if desired. Wash your hands after applying
the medication.
If being used in the nose, after insertion of the medication, squeeze the
nostrils together and then release them. Squeezing and releasing of the
nostrils should be repeated for about one minute to allow the medication to
cover the inside of the nose. Another method, after insertion of the
medication, is to press the sides of the nose together, then gently
massage. Either method should be continued until you can taste the
medication.
If any unusual or bothersome skin reactions occur, contact your physician
or pharmacist.
If you miss a dose, apply it as soon as you remember. However, if it is
almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your
regular schedule.
Store this medication in its original labelled container at room
temperature, away from heat and light. Protect it from freezing. Keep this
and all medication out of the reach of children.
Safely discard medication after its expiry date. Do not use this medication
for future problems without consulting your physician.
