This medication is usually taken on an empty stomach with a full glass of
water. If it causes stomach upset, you may take it with milk or food.
Ditropan-XL (the extended-release tablets) should be swallowed whole; do
not crush, chew, or divide tablets. The medication is contained within a
non-absorbable shell that is eliminated from the body; occasionally the
tablet shell may be observed in the stool but do not be concerned.
This medication may cause drowsiness. It may also cause blurred vision. Be
careful not to drive or operate machinery until you know how you react to
this medication.
While taking this medication, you may find that your eyes are more
sensitive than usual to sunlight. Wearing sunglasses may help.
This medication may cause you to sweat less, which can lead to increased
body temperature. Be careful not to become overheated during hot weather or
while exercising.
Alcohol will add to the drowsiness caused by this medication; avoid alcohol
while taking oxybutynin. Tranquilizers, sleeping pills, medicines for
seizures, some pain killers, and some cold and allergy medications may add
to drowsiness. Check with your physician or pharmacist before taking any of
these.
While you are taking this medication, your mouth, nose and throat may feel
very dry. Sucking on ice chips or hard candy or chewing sugarless gum may
help.
Stop taking this medication and contact your doctor immediately if you have
eye pain, a rash or hives.
Other side effects that may occur include difficult urination, nausea,
vomiting, and constipation. Fluid and dietary fibre intake may help prevent
the constipation. Check with your doctor if these or any side effects
persist or are bothersome.
If you are 65 years or older, you may be more likely to develop side
effects to this medication, including drowsiness, blurred vision, dry
mouth, constipation, and difficult urination. Check with your doctor if
these or any side effects persist or are bothersome.
