This medication contains pancreatic enzymes which are important for normal
digestion of foods. Adequate replacement of enzymes decreases the number of
bowel movements and improves consistency of the stool.
Take this medication exactly as prescribed by your physician. It must be
taken regularly to be fully effective. Do not crush or chew the enteric
coated tablets or capsules. This damages the coating and the medication may
not be effective. Take the dose with a glass of water or juice.
If you cannot swallow capsules whole, the contents may be sprinkled on
beverages or soft food (applesauce, dessert gelatin) which does not require
chewing. Take the dose immediately; do not store these food mixtures for
use at a later time because the drug will be broken down. Rinse your mouth
with water or juice and swallow it to make sure no drug particles are left
in your mouth.
If special dietary recommendations or prescription of other medications or
antacids have been made by your physician, carefully follow these measures
for the best results from therapy.
Side effects from this medication are uncommon. However, should you
experience any persistent or annoying effects, especially abdominal pain or
cramps, diarrhea, or red blood in the stools, contact your physician or
pharmacist.
If using the powdered product, avoid inhaling the powder; wearing a dust
mask may be advisable. Avoid contact with the skin. The powder may be very
irritating to nasal passages and throat. The powder may be sprinkled on
food or mixed in liquid and taken immediately. Rinse mouth with water and
swallow it to make sure no powder is left in your mouth.
Maintain contact with your physician while taking this medication. Periodic
examinations and/or tests may be performed to assess the effectiveness of
treatment.
Do not switch brands of medication unless instructed to do so by your
physician.
Store this medication in its original labelled container away from heat and
light. Keep out of the reach of children.
