Pentamidine inhalation treatment is used to prevent the development or
recurrence of Pneumocystis pneumonia. You must continue inhalation on a
regular basis even if you are feeling well.
Inhale the drug from the nebulizer device according to the instructions of
the manufacturer and your physician.
If you are also using an inhaled bronchodilator (medicine to relieve
breathing problems), wait about 10 minutes after inhaling this before
starting pentamidine inhalation. This will decrease coughing.
If you feel dizzy, you may be breathing too fast during treatment. Stop the
inhalation for a few minutes then start again, breathing more slowly to
avoid dizziness.
Some patients notice a bitter or metallic taste when using pentamidine.
Sucking on hard candy after treatment can help reduce this effect
Lung irritation may be increased in people who smoke.
If you experience a burning feeling in the back of your throat, interrupt
inhalation treatment to drink some fluids to relieve this.
If you have problems breathing or any other troublesome symptoms, contact
your physician.
Dissolved drug can be kept for 48 hours if stored at room temperature and
protected from light, otherwise discard unused solution.
Store this medication in its original labelled container out of the reach
of children.
