Perphenazine is sometimes used as a tranquilizer to treat schizophrenia and
other psychoses or to relieve anxiety, excitement, tension or apprehension.
It is also used to relieve nausea and vomiting and persistent hiccoughs.
Take the medication exactly as prescribed by your physician. It must be
taken regularly to be fully effective. Do not stop taking the drug unless
you first obtain approval from your physician.
If you have been prescribed the oral solution, it is concentrated and
should be diluted with water or fruit juice just before taking it. Do not
mix it with cola, coffee, tea or apple juice.
If you forget to take a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it is
almost time for your next dose, omit the missed one, and continue with the
regular schedule.
This medication may cause drowsiness. Do not drive or operate machinery if
drowsiness occurs.
Avoid alcohol while taking this medication. Other tranquilizers, sleeping
pills, medicines for seizures, some pain killers, and some cold and allergy
medications may add to drowsiness. Check with your physician or pharmacist
before taking any of these.
Dizziness, lightheadedness or fainting may occur when you first start
taking this medication, especially when you get up from a sitting or lying
position. Getting up slowly may help.
This medication may cause blurred vision. Do not drive or operate machinery
if blurred vision occurs.
This medication may cause your mouth to feel dry; chewing sugarless gum or
sucking ice or sugarless candy may relieve dry mouth.
Check with your physician if drowsiness, blurred vision, dizziness, or dry
mouth continue or get worse.
You may develop constipation while taking this medication. Increased
dietary bulk (fibre) may be helpful. You may need to take laxatives and
your pharmacist can advise on this. Ask your physician for advice if
constipation continues, or if you have vomiting or stomach pain as well as
constipation.
You may become more sensitive to sunlight or to extreme heat or cold while
taking this medication. Avoid too much sun and use sunscreen lotion. Avoid
becoming too hot or too cold.
Check with your physician if any of the following side effects occur:
muscle spasms, restlessness, shuffling walk, jerky movements of the head,
face, neck and mouth, trembling of hands and fingers, sore throat, fever,
unusual bleeding, or difficulty in urination.
Check with your physician if you intend to become pregnant or if you wish
to breast-feed.
Store this medication in its original labelled container in a dry place and
protect it from light and excessive heat.
Do not let anyone else use this medication. Keep it out of the reach of
children.
