Intracavernosal injection: An injectable mixture of phentolamine and
papaverine is used to improve erection in men with impotence.
Cleanse the injection site with alcohol. Using a sterile needle, inject the
medicine slowly (over 1-2 minutes) into the base of the penis as
demonstrated by your physician. Don't inject just under the skin, it must
go deeper. Injection just under the skin will cause pain and swelling. If
this occurs, stop injecting, withdraw the needle and reinsert it,
positioning it properly before continuing with the injection. Tingling at
the tip of the penis may occur but this is not harmful.
After injection, put pressure on the injection site for 1-2 minutes to
prevent bruising. Then massage penis as directed by your physician. This
will spread the medication evenly.
The medication begins to work in about 10 minutes. You should attempt
intercourse within 2 hours of injection.
Do not use more of this than recommended by your physician. If too much is
used the erection may become so strong that it lasts too long and may not
reverse. This is called priapism. If it persists too long, blood supply to
the penis may be stopped and permanent damage may occur.
Contact your physician immediately if the erection lasts longer than 4
hours or becomes painful. Priapism may have occurred and must be treated to
prevent permanent damage.
Examine your penis regularly for lumps or curvature that may be signs of
fibrotic tissue forming. Contact your physician if this occurs.
If bleeding occurs at the injection site and doesn't stop after applying
pressure for 1-2 minutes, notify your physician.
Do not use the injection more often than recommended by your physician.
Dizziness may occur occasionally after injection but is usually no cause
for concern.
Store this medication in its original labelled container away from heat and
direct light. Do not freeze.
Keep out of the reach of children.
