Probenecid is used to treat chronic gout and other medical problems
associated with excess production of uric acid by the body. It does not
cure it, but will prevent gout attacks after you have been taking it for a
few months. It may also be given to some patients taking certain kinds of
antibiotics, as it increases the effectiveness of the antibiotic.
If this medicine upsets your stomach, take it with food, milk or an
antacid.
If the drug is being used to lower serum uric acid levels, to help prevent
kidney stones from forming, drink at least six to eight full (8 ounce)
glasses of fluids every day, unless otherwise directed by your physician.
If you have gout, it is important that you take this medication exactly as
prescribed by your physician; it must be taken regularly to be fully
effective, even if you feel well. Always keep an adequate supply on hand.
Contact your physician if you develop a rash, lower back pain or painful
urination while taking this medication.
Avoid taking high doses of ASA (Aspirin), ASA-containing products, or
ibuprofen while taking this medication. Doses of 325 mg ASA daily are okay.
Ask your physician or pharmacist for an ASA-substitute, e.g. acetaminophen,
if larger doses of ASA are required.
If you are taking this medication to treat gout, you should moderate your
alcohol intake since alcohol increases the amount of uric acid in the blood
and lessens the effect of probenecid.
Stay in contact with your physician so that your response to the medication
can be followed and the need for continued therapy can be assessed.
Keep this medication in its original labelled container and out of the
reach of children. Do not allow anyone else to take your medication.
