Pyrazinamide is used to help treat tuberculosis (TB). It is used in
combination with other antitubercular drugs.
To ensure that your tuberculosis is completely cured, it is important that
you take this medication regularly as prescribed, and for the full time of
treatment. Although you may begin to feel better after a few weeks, the
drug has to be taken for a longer period before the bacteria that causes TB
is completely eliminated.
Do not miss any doses. If you do miss a dose, take it as soon as you
remember. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed
dose and continue with your regular schedule. Do not take two doses to make
up for a missed one.
Notify your physician immediately if you experience any of the following:
fever, loss of appetite, unusual tiredness or weakness, nausea and
vomiting, darkened urine, yellowish discolouration of the skin and eyes,
pain or swelling of the joints, such as the big toe, ankle, and knee. If
other side effects occur, including itching or skin rash, contact your
physician.
It is important that your progress is closely monitored by your physician;
try to keep all appointments with your physician or the clinic.
Contact your physician if your symptoms do not improve within 2 to 3 weeks,
or if they become worse.
If you have diabetes, this medication may cause false test results with
urine ketone tests (e.g. pink-brown colour with Acetest, Ketostix,
Chemstrip K).
Tell your physician if you are pregnant, or plan to become pregnant, or if
you wish to breast-feed your baby.
Store this medication in its original labelled container, out of the reach
of children.
