Rifampin is used to treat tuberculosis as well as to treat or prevent other
infections.
Take this medication one hour before meals or two hours after meals on an
empty stomach. If bothered by stomach upset, it may be taken with food.
When used in tuberculosis, this medication must be taken regularly and for
a prolonged period of time. Do not stop taking the medication even though
you may feel well, unless so instructed by your physician.
Keep an adequate supply on hand. Stopping and starting therapy may increase
the likelihood of side effects occurring.
This medication may cause urine, feces, sputum, sweat, tears and breast
milk to be coloured red-orange. This is harmless but may permanently stain
soft-contact lenses.
Side effects are infrequent. Notify physician if any of the following
occur: darkening of urine, yellowing of eyes, soreness of mouth and
tongue, bruising of skin.
This medication may decrease the effectiveness of birth control pills.
Consider another effective method of contraception while on this
medication.
Store capsules at room temperature in a labelled tightly closed container
away from light, heat and moisture. Keep this medication out of the reach
of children.
