Selegiline is used for the treatment of Parkinson's disease. It is also
taken for the treatment of Alzheimer's disease.
Take this medication as prescribed by your physician.
The daily dose should be taken in the morning with breakfast. If you take
this drug twice a day, take the first dose with breakfast and the second
dose with lunch. If doses are taken later in the day you may have
difficulty sleeping at night.
When you first start taking this drug with levodopa for the treatment of
Parkinson's disease, the side effects of levodopa may increase. Inform your
physician immediately if this occurs as the dose of levodopa may require
adjustment.
This medication may interact with certain drugs to produce an undesirable
reaction. Do not take any medication without first discussing it with your
physician or pharmacist. This includes over-the-counter drugs such as cough
and cold preparations, sinus and hay fever medications, or diet pills.
High doses of this drug may cause an undesirable interaction with certain
foods that contain tyramine. If you are taking selegiline 20 mg per day
or more, avoid these foods: cheese, pickled fish, liver, yeast extract,
meat extracts such as Marmite, Bovril, Oxo; red wine and beer.
If you experience flushing of the face, sweating, pounding headache, chest
pain, rapid heart beat, a choking sensation, go to the nearest hospital
emergency department immediately. You may be experiencing an interaction
between this drug and another drug or food.
Store this medication in its original labelled container at room
temperature, out of the reach of children.
