Sulfinpyrazone is used to treat chronic gout and other medical problems associated with excess production of uric acid by the body. It does not cure it, but will prevent gout attacks after you have been taking it for a few months. Sulfinpyrazone also acts on blood cells called platelets and it may be used to reduce the risk of clotting in various conditions.

Take this medication exactly as prescribed by your physician. If you are taking it to treat gout, it must be taken regularly to stabilize the amount of uric acid in your blood. Preferably take it at the same time(s) each day; sudden fluctuations up or down may bring on a gouty attack. If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, omit the missed dose and continue with your regular schedule.

If you have an attack of gout, do not stop taking sulfinpyrazone. Check with your physician who may wish to prescribe additional medication to control the symptoms of an acute attack.

If this medicine upsets your stomach, take it with food, milk or an antacid. If discomfort persists, check with your physician.

If you are taking sulfinpyrazone for gout, drink at least eight full (8 ounce) glasses of fluids every day, to help prevent kidney stones from forming, unless otherwise directed by your physician.

Taking large doses of ASA (aspirin) or ASA-containing medications may lessen the effectiveness of sulfinpyrazone in gout. Doses of 325 mg ASA daily are okay. Ask your physician or pharmacist for an ASA-substitute, e.g. acetaminophen, if larger doses of ASA are required.

Moderate your alcohol intake since alcohol increases the amount of uric acid in the blood and lessens the effect of sulfinpyrazone in gout.

Your physician should be told if you have or have had stomach ulcers, blood disease, kidney disease, and if you are taking any of the following medications: aspirin, anticoagulants (blood thinners) or diuretics (water pills). He/she should also know if you are or intend to become pregnant, or if you wish to breast-feed.

Occasionally, this medicine may cause unwanted effects. Check with your physician if any of the following occur: skin rash, bloody or black tarry stools, blood in the urine, lower back pain, sore throat and fever, unusual bleeding or bruising.

Stay in contact with your physician so that your response to the medication can be followed and the need for continued therapy can be assessed.

Store this medication in its original labelled container at room temperature, out of the reach of children.
