Ticlopidine acts on blood cells called platelets. In people with certain
conditions (such as atherosclerosis) that can narrow the blood vessels,
platelets may stick together to form a blood clot. At sites of blood vessel
narrowing in the brain or the heart, a blood clot may produce serious
complications such as a heart attack or a stroke. This medication lessens
the risk of these complications.
To be fully effective, this medication must be taken regularly. Take each
dose at its scheduled time. Do not stop taking the medication unless you
first obtain approval from your physician. Do not attempt to see if you can
go without the medication, since this could add to the risk of experiencing
a serious problem such as stroke.
This medication should be taken at mealtime to decrease possible stomach
upset. Taking it with food also increases the completeness of absorption of
the medication. It is usually taken twice a day, with breakfast and supper.
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as possible. However, if it is almost
time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular
schedule.
Make sure your physician is aware of all other medical conditions that you
have, and of all of the medications you are taking, including
nonprescription items, especially ASA (Aspirin). Do not begin taking any
new medications, even nonprescription drugs, without first consulting with
your physician. Inform any physician and dentist that you are taking this
medication.
If you have recently had an angioplasty with a stent insertion, your doctor
may prescribe ticlopidine together with aspirin for up to one month
following the procedure. Do not take aspirin and ticlopidine together for
longer than prescribed by your physician.
Maintain close contact with your physician while you are taking this
medication. He/she may wish to perform periodic examinations and blood
tests to assess how your body responds to it.
Promptly notify your physician of any sudden change in your condition,
particularly if you develop fever, an infection, unusual bleeding or
bruising, or yellow skin. If these symptoms occur and your physician is not
readily available, stop taking this medication until you contact him/her.
Some patients develop diarrhea or stomach upset while taking this
medication. These symptoms are usually mild and disappear within a few
weeks. If they persist or are bothersome, notify your physician.
Store in its original labelled container, away from heat, light and
moisture, and out of the reach of children and pets.
