Tipranavir (tip-RAN-na-veer, Aptivus) is an antiviral drug used to treat
patients infected with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). It is always
taken with ritonavir (Norvir).
Before taking this medication, inform your physician if you have an allergy
to sulfa drugs since a cross-reaction is possible; if you have hepatitis or
other liver problems; or if you plan to become pregnant or wish to breast
feed.
Take this medication exactly as prescribed by your physician, in the amount
prescribed. Taking more could increase the occurrence of adverse effects.
It is important to take it regularly along with other drugs prescribed. Do
not stop taking it without the approval of your physician. Take it with
food to improve its absorption. Swallow the capsules whole; do not chew
them.
The action of this drug could be altered by taking other drugs. No other
drugs should be used without the knowledge of your physician. Do not use
herbal products containing St. Johns wort (Hypericum perforatum).
Drugs that enhance erectile function, such as Viagra or Cialis, must be
given at a low dose while taking this medication. See your physician or
pharmacist.
Since this drug may reduce the efficacy of oral hormonal contraceptives, an
alternative or additional form of contraception is recommended.
This drug is usually well tolerated, although it may cause stomach upset or
rash. Diarrhea may occur and usually resolves within a few weeks. Inform
your physician if you notice any unusual or troublesome effects, especially
yellow skin, dark urine, pale stools, increased thirst, fatigue, frequent
urination, weight loss, or change in body shape. Levels of cholesterol and
triglycerides may rise.
Note that this medication does not prevent the transmission of the
infection to other people, therefore care should be taken to avoid exposing
others.

Store this medication in its original container, away from heat, moisture
and light, and out of the reach of children. Do not allow anyone else to
use this medication.
