Vardenafil (var-DEN-a-fil; Levitra) is a medicine that helps a man with
erectile dysfunction get and maintain an erection when he is sexually
excited.
This drug may be taken with food; however, if you take vardenafil with a
high-fat meal, it may take longer to work. Do not take this medication with
grapefruit juice, or with more than a moderate amount of alcohol (ie, more
than 3.4 fluid ounces of 40% alcohol for a 70 kg person) as this may
increase the side effects.
It is not a hormone or an aphrodisiac. It does not cure erectile
dysfunction, increase sexual desire, or protect a man or his partner from
sexually transmitted diseases, including HIV.
You should not take this medication if you have been advised not to have
sexual activity because of health problems.
If you experience any heart symptoms before, during, or after, sexual
activity (eg., chest pain, angina), stop the activity immediately and relax
for 5-10 minutes. If the pain continues, seek emergency aid and say that
you have taken this drug. Do not take nitroglycerin unless it has been at
least 24 hours since your last vardenafil dose, or longer if you are
elderly or have kidney or liver impairment.
Vardenafil can interact with certain medications. Before you start taking
it, ask your physician about taking it with other drugs you take, including
any nonprescription, herbal, or alternative products. In particular, you
should not take this medication if you use any medicines called nitrates,
either on a regular basis or from time to time, because to do so can cause
a sudden, unsafe drop in your blood pressure that can lead to dizziness,
fainting, heart attack or stroke. Nitrates include nitroglycerin tablets,
patches, ointment, paste or spray, isosorbide dinitrate, isosorbide
mononitrate for your angina, butyl nitrate and amyl nitrate (poppers). Wait
at least 2 weeks after your last dose of a nitrate before taking
vardenafil.
Vardenafil only works during sexual arousal. It should generally be taken
25 to 60 minutes before sexual activity, although you may initiate sexual
activity as soon as 15 minutes and as long as 5 hours after taking a dose.
Do not take more than one dose during a 24 hour period, or a higher dose
than your physician has prescribed for you. If the dose you are taking does
not produce the results you want, speak with your physician to find the
dose that is best for you.
Side effects are usually mild and temporary; the most common ones are
headache, flushing, stuffy nose, and indigestion. Temporary visual changes
such as increased brightness of light have been reported rarely. If you
experience a sudden loss of eyesight in one or both eyes (reported rarely),
stop taking vardenafil and contact your physician.
If you have an erection that lasts for an unusually long time (eg, up to 4
hours), get medical attention immediately. If this condition is not treated
right away, penis damage or permanent loss of your ability to get an
erection may occur.
If you have experienced any unexpected or serious reactions to this drug,
this can be reported to Health Canada's monitoring program (tollfree
telephone 1-866-234-2345, tollfree fax 1-866-678-6789). Note that this is
not an emergency number. Also ensure that your physicians are informed and
record this for the future.
Store this medication in its original container, away from heat, moisture
and light, and out of the reach of children. Do not allow anyone else to
use this medication.
